CPC STUDY COURSE · 2026 EDITION
Michigan practice desk
Find the state policy, service-date update and benefit administrator behind a Michigan Medicaid claim.
National coding instructions tell you how to describe the documented diagnosis, service or supply. Michigan Medicaid policy adds coverage and claim requirements. Keep both decisions visible.
Read the Michigan Medicaid lesson for worked explanations and a complete policy-review exercise.
The CPC exam is a national credential examination. This state practice desk adds local payer skills; it does not add a Michigan-specific section to the national CPC blueprint. [aapc-exam]
Start with the service date
This course's cases use July 1 through September 30, 2026 service dates. The live manual now shows the October 1, 2026 edition. The course's cited policy principles were compared with the July edition during the October source review. MDHHS incorporates policy bulletins quarterly; identify the edition and effective bulletins that govern the actual service date. A publication date does not necessarily govern every section inside a bulletin. [mi-manual-july-2026, General Information1.1; mi-code-update-2631]
For example, MMP 26-31 was issued July 31 but contains several effective dates, including a correction applying from January 1. Read the section for the actual service. [mi-code-update-2631]
Build a policy note
Use a fictional chart to practice this sequence:
1. Record the service date, actual setting and performed work.
2. Identify the program and organization administering that particular benefit.
3. Find the general, specialty and billing sections in the manual.
4. Check later effective bulletins and relevant clarifications.
5. Confirm provider, coverage and authorization requirements.
6. Explain the coding conclusion separately from the payment question.
You can complete the course exercise with the public sources. No CHAMPS account or real patient record is required.
Keep the common boundaries clear
A valid national code does not establish state coverage for every provider group. An authorization request is not an approval, and an approval does not guarantee eligibility or payment. A provider's failure to obtain required authorization does not automatically make the patient liable. [mi-manual-july-2026, General Information9.1,9.2.A.1,9.3,10.1; mi-code-update-2631]
Healthy Michigan health-plan administration and fee-for-service administration have distinct roles. Identify the responsible organization for the service rather than assuming the program name supplies every billing instruction. [mi-manual-july-2026, Healthy Michigan Plan1.2]
